Chapter Nine

In seconds Spencer was naked and Avery returned his bold, assessing look with one of her own. His shoulders were broad, his chest wide with just the right amount of hair dusting the contours. His flat belly and long, muscular legs gave him the lean look of a runner.

And then there was that part of him that was all male and made her female parts quiver.

“Is everything all right?” he asked, gravel wrapping around every word.

“Perfect.”

When she reached out for him, he joined her on the bed and gathered her close. In spite of her conflict and resistance, she slipped into his arms as easily as anything she’d ever done in her life. He brushed his palm over her bare breast and down her side until he hooked a thumb in the elastic of her panties and dragged them down her legs for her to kick off.

And then he kissed her, firing up her senses and her wanting. She couldn’t seem to draw enough air into her lungs and her hips arched against him. He knew what she was asking for and settled his body over hers. His knee nudged her thighs apart before he gently pushed inside, filling her, thrusting deeply. She picked up his rhythm effortlessly, as if they’d done this before.

The sensations that rushed through her were more powerful than anything she’d ever felt in her life. Like a tornado. A tsunami. The tension inside her coiled and curled, twisted and tangled until she prayed to come apart. He slid his hand between their bodies and with his thumb found the knot of femininity where they were joined. One touch sent her over the edge, tumbling into a chasm of pleasure so powerful she reveled in the aftershocks and held on to him for all she was worth. He murmured words she didn’t comprehend but knew were absolutely right.

And then he began to move again. One thrust. Then another. Until he went completely still and groaned out his own release. Struggling to catch his breath, he rested his forehead against hers and she felt more than saw his grin.

“Definitely perfect,” he said.

Euphoria lasted just until rational thought returned and that wasn’t nearly long enough. On the plus side, at least she’d kept her promise not to go to his room. The minus part was how idiotic she’d been to think that promise would protect her from herself.

And that was the worst of all. They’d been so caught up in the passion that neither of them had thought about protection.

The next morning while driving to Mercy Medical Center Dallas, Spencer decided that the silence in the car could appropriately be described as pregnant. As in, what the hell had he been thinking last night not using a condom?

The short answer was he hadn’t been thinking, at least not with his head. He’d wanted Avery in his bed pretty much from the first moment he saw her, but the acute factor had gone up ever since that kiss outside her door at his parents’ house.
